Whole Goat
Shhhh......don't tell our cattle ranching friends, but goat is our FAVORITE red meat. This lean, mild red meat is one of the most consumed meats in the world for a reason!
ABOUT OUR GOAT MEAT
Our pasture raised goats are sold for meat as WHOLE goats only, after they reach 90-100 pounds live weight. Our butcher at Hines Meat Co. (La Grande, OR) will be happy to cut and package your goat to your specifications.
UNDERSTANDING HANGING WEIGHT
Our fee for goat meat is based on a flat fee for a 90-100 pound live weight. When the goat has reached the target weight we transport it to the butcher. The butcher processes the goat and bases their fees on the "hanging weight" of the goat carcass that is hanging in their cooler. Hanging weight is typically 50 - 60% of the live animal weight. So a 100 pound live goat is expected to have a hanging weight of 50 - 60 pounds. The carcass is hung to chill and then processed to your specifications. The final amount of product you receive will be dependent on the choices you make related to boneless or bone-in meat. The final amount of meat you receive will be less than the hanging weight, as some of the bones are removed in the process.
BUTCHERING CHOICES
We will communicate with you to determine the date we will take the goat to the butcher. Once we drop the goat off at the butcher, they will reach out to you directly with some questions about how you prefer your meat to be cut and packaged. These choices include the thickness of chops, the number of chops per package, preference for kabob or stew meat, types of roasts you would like, etc.
PRICING, ORDERING and PICK-UP
Your deposit reserves a goat until it is ready and then becomes your payment to FEATHER GOAT FARM for the live goat. All other payments are directly between you and Hines Meat Company. Once we drop the animal off, they reach out directly to you over the phone and help you through the choices you have. You then pick up your packaged meat at their business and pay them directly for the cost of processing. They charge a flat $85 kill fee + a cut and wrap fee of $1.00/pound hanging weight with a $85 minimum. For goats, the cut and wrap fee will pretty much always be the $85 minimum fee. Your "all in" expense including payment to FEATHER GOAT FARM and HINES MEAT CO. will be around $450.
This sounds intimidating, but Hines Meat Co. are great to work with and we are here to help however needed.
RESERVING YOUR GOAT
We produce a limited amount of WHOLE goats for meat each year. We recommend reserving your goat as early as possible to ensure there is a goat for you. We anticipate having goats available in June 2024 and then again in October 2024.
